The town of Steamboat Rock took its name from a large projecting rock formation on the bluff of the Iowa River that runs through the town. The bluff is located on the southwest corner of the town of Steamboat. When the first settlers came to the valley and looked upon the projecting bluffs it appeared as though a number of steamboats were lying at anchor.

Sometime after this the town became known as Lithopolis. The name “Lithopolis” is a Greek name which means “rock city.” However, in 1870 the name Steamboat Rock became the official name of the town. Time and elements have altered the shape of the rock formations, but if one uses a little imagination, the suggestion of a steamboat may still be seen. Enough to forever give a pretty name to a very small town. Anyone visiting the town of Steamboat Rock and meeting the community can see why the town is nicknamed as it is - “A Valley of Friendliness.”

Steamboat Rock is one of the oldest places in Hardin County; it was platted in 1855 and became incorporated in 1875. In those days it was stopping station on a mail route from Waterloo to Eldora. When the early pioneers came, they found many Indian tribes and wild game, including buffalo.
